Chinese New Year in Suzhou

I can't imagine how anybody calls anybody else to send New Year's greetings here in China; with the constant rattling of fireworks and ladyfingers, it's hard even to hear your phone go off, much less hold a conversation with it. Today is the Lantern Festival, yuanxiaojie, which marks the final day of Spring Festival vacation as well as the last day for fireworks in the city. The four boys from the building across from me have, I think, been running around with cigarette lighters in their hands all day, and the stone courtyard between my building and number 5 is blown with small drifts and lines of red wax paper flakes. Under the grey sky, they look like the aftermath of some destruction instead of old celebration.

I have heard that Beijing is an exciting time during New Year, which officially passed on the 14th of this month (I know, Valentine's Day, and also the same weekend as NBA All-Star week, a coincidence that's generated more than a few good jokes over here).  I'm sure it is a lot of fun up here, amid the cold and dirt, but since Spring Festival is supposed to be passed with family, I did the next best thing and opted for a friend's family; more accurately, Jingjing graciously invited me to spend the vacation with her family in Suzhou.

Happy Chinese New Year 2010

Learn Yu Wen would like to wish everyone a happy Chinese New Year! 2010 is the year of the Dragon. Here's a quick description of the event from HelloKids.com

On February 15, 2010, the Chinese New Year celebrations will begin and will last 15 days!  This is the most important holiday on the Chinese calendar.  The Chinese calendar differs from the Western calendar because it is based on the lunar year and follows a 12-year cycle.  So, the date of Chinese New Year changes every year.  The 12-year pattern aligns with the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac.  There are many legends that explain the creation of the Chinese Zodiac.  The most common and popular legend explains that the Jade Emperor invited all the animals to participate in a race.  The first twelve to cross the swift river and arrive at the finish would win a coveted position in the Chinese Zodiac.  Each animal was awarded a position based when they arrived at the finish line and it is from this race that the traits of each animal in the Chinese Zodiac are derived.

A Poem for the Chinese New Year

Boston area translator and cultural guru Canaan Morse brings us his latest poem for the Chinese New Year.

Hu's in China

Come and give a round of applause for 庚寅年,
whom we saw coming. We know he is,
though not what he brings;
besides a new jacket and s for the baby,
expenses, a newsprinted war
between Muslim and , and Oba
still blowing on the trumpet of pe
‘til he’s blue.

The Times and Time tell me that this year,
nothing is certain; but I’m not .
The places we’ve been
are small indication of where we’ll .
Hell, some say that sus will reappear,
though I don’t think so.
I only know
that I'm not getting any ger, I’ve lost
some of what I was taking a
and will lose more soon. So tell me,
is this the year for things that are old—
or merely for that which was once ?
